Good walk, great beer: Yorkshire June/July 2014

Monty the Motorhome is happily taking in the Wharfedale views, while communing with four other Murvi’s who are on site.

Today most of us on the ‘meet’ walked over to Littondale and the village of Arncliffe. This meant a bit of a climb up the side of Wharfedale, from Kettlewell, to reach the ridge between the two valleys. Then a bit of a drop down to reach Arncliffe. Overall it was fairly straightforward, with just two slightly awkward sections.

Looking up Wharfedale from the top of the ridge

Arriving about midday we headed for the churchyard and had our packed lunches. The cheese and pickle buns tasted good, as did the Earl Grey teacake.
Had a quick look around the village church. There was an unbroken list of rectors going back to the 12th Century, as well as details of the men the village sent to fight in the battle of Flodden - 1513
Then on to the village pub - The Falcon. Some beer is still served out of jugs here - the bar staff simply fill a jug from a barrel behind the bar - no pipes or gas, just straight out by gravity, and glasses are filled from the jug. Lovely Timothy Taylor’s, hardly any fizz, room temperature and oudles of taste. What a place.

The walk back was not quite as arduous as the route basically contoured round the end of the spur that separates the two valleys. Great views and we were lucky with the weather as it looked a little grim when we emerged from the pub. However the rain held off and it come out quite sunny in the end.
