September 27th 2014: France: Le Touquet

Monty the Motorhome is spending his last French night parked up at a Passion site just inland from Boulogne.

We spent the morning in Le Touquet, walking into the centre from the Aire. Initially we were not impressed with the place. A huge sandy beach is an obvious attraction for holiday makers, but it appears that developers have been given a free hand and gone ahead to construct numerous high rise flats that just look awful. We are now out of season, so 90% of these places are shut up, giving the place a dilapidated feeling. However just a few blocks inland there are leafy dwellings which are much better.

We also felt the place had shut down, until reaching the actual town centre. Here things changed dramatically. A Saturday market was in full swing and the place was bustling. The market was quite extensive - probably the biggest and most comprehensive we have visited. We bought a bit of bread and some bits from the patisserie - just to keep us going over the next few days.

Our site last night. It filled up completely by about 8.00pm

Leaving Le Touquet we headed to Boulogne and the massive Auchan hypermarket. It really is immense and from what we could see the prices are cheap. No wonder this place is recommended as one of the best places for Brits to buy provisions - either at the start of their holiday, or like us at the end. Our main purpose was to stock up on cheap wine. No problem.

Then on to the overnight Passion site in the small hamlet of Brunembert. It is a dairy farm, which also does a line in apple products, and is right out in the sticks. The route in took us on small minor roads and we have ended up just above the farm buildings and on the edge of a little orchard - see the photo below.

We called in to the farm shop to say hello and also sample what they had on offer. Cider, Calvados and cheese from their own cows. That’s what we tasted and bought - though there were also a number of other vegs, fruit and jams on sale.

Hopefully tonight will be a peaceful one. There are no main roads nearby and only two other vans present.
