May 15th 2015: Cornwall: Minack revisited

Monty the Motorhome is looking forward to his second night in Treen Village car park.

We had originally planned to move on, but the weather remained fair, and we wanted to do a bit more walking in the area. So back to Pyre Cottage (custodians of the car park) and another night booked.

It is only a short walk from the village to the coastal path and a view out over Pednvoundir Beach. The only access is a small path that winds steeply down to it. We didn’t venture down this time, but it has to go on the list for a future visit as it looks one of the best beaches I have seen. Golden sand, stunning rocky backdrop, rolling waves and sufficiently remote to only have a handful of people at any one time.

Our objective was the next cove along the path - Porthcurno - home to another stunning beach, as well as lying below the Minack Theatre. This outdoor area, built into a rocky amphitheatre, has become internationally famous. Productions are staged throughout the summer, with many renowned people performing. We wanted to go back and reminisce, as it was quite a few years ago that we brought the children to see an evening performance of The Owl and the Pussy Cat. The place itself did not seem to have changed much, though various extensions has obviously been added. However the big difference is that it has become a wonderful garden of sub-tropical plants, worth visiting just to see them alone. Also worth a mention is something that does not get in the tourist guide literature - the toilets. These would certainly make an appearance in an English ‘Good Toilet Guide’. Clean, spacious and with pots of fresh flowers - in both the Ladies and Gents.

A late packed lunch was lazily devoured on Porthcurno beach, watching the waves roll in.

Lunch stop

Back to Monty for our evening meal tonight, which will be Aunty Angela’s recipe for Chicken Balti one pot dish.
