May 12th 2016: Gower: Return to Hillend

Monty the Motorhome is breathing in the fresh sea air at Hillend camp site, just outside the small village of Llangennith, which is right out at the end of the Gower peninsula in South Wales.
This is familiar territory, albeit this is Monty’s first trip to Hillend. Many family holidays were spent at Gower, and Hillend was always our favourite destination. The reason was the setting - right next to the famous Rhossili beach with it’s gorgeous flat sands and waves that make it one of the premier surfing spots in the UK.
However this is not a nostalgic pilgrimage, it is actually a reconnaissance for a later group visit in July of children, partners and parents of partners. Hopefully, weather permitting, we will all meet up for a weekend of beach fun.

Anyway enough about planned things for the future. Hillend campsite is essentially four grass fields and caters in the main for tents. We have seen it at the height of summer looking like a pop festival gathering, but today there was only two tents when we arrived just after 1.00pm. We quickly bagged one of the six electric hookups, but I doubt there will be people queuing for them later. Our pitch is right next to a small reed bed, which is alive with birds. So far we’ve spotted reed bunting, stonechat and linnet.

After a bit of lunch we walked along the beach to the island of Burry Holms, then re-traced our steps back to the campsite. The weather was warm, but slightly muggy and a couple of times we heard something like a roll of thunder, but I suspect it may have been coming from the Castle Martin tank range which is not all that far away as the crow flies.

Hot dogs for tea tonight followed by a wander round the static caravan part of the site. There were some lovely ‘lodges’ for sale - a static in reality, but really built up to be virtually like a small house. We were quite taken by one in particular - it had a view out to sea that would just keep you captivated for hours. Perhaps a move ....?

Looking back down the beach from Burry Holms. Low tide this afternoon, but a bit too hazy to see things clearly
