August 16th 2015: Norway: Skjerneset Bryggecamping 1

Monty the Motorhome is parked up at Skjerneset Bryggecamping, on the island of Averøya, just to the west of the town of Kristiansund.

We moved on from sunny Trondheim this morning, having first had a morning walk along the river, round by the cathedral (really to use their loos) and back to our site.
Our first priority was to fill up with LPG, which meant hoping that the Norwegian pumps operated in a similar way to those in the UK. Luckily they did and there was no need for any adapter, or special procedures.
Then on to our next destination - the Atlanterhavsveien or Atlantic Ocean Road. This stretch of highway is only 8km long, but has been described by the Guardian as ‘the world’s best road trip’. The route connects 17 islets between the island of Averøya and Vevang with a series of dramatic bridges, such that the road rises, falls and twists like a sea serpent.
Our intention was to overnight at Skjerneset and then drive the route tomorrow. However on arrival we changed our minds and decided on two nights as the setting seemed so tranquil.
The place is right besides the sea and sprawls over quite a large area, given over to a mixture of cabins and motorhome/camping places. The Lonely Planet describes it as a hyper-friendly place and that’s no exaggeration. When we went to book in the owner was really laid back, just saying pay when you go. He then showed us all around the building where reception is housed. This former fish warehouse is full of little snug rooms on the ground floor, with comfy chairs, for any guest to use. However it goes on. On the first and second floor is a family museum (the owner was formerly a deep sea fisherman), and it is crammed full of stuff - mainly from the trawler he owned. It just goes on and on. He burbled on about various bits and pieces before just ambling off.

Back at the van we had meatballs and veg for tea. Then out came the fly screen for the side opening door, as midges seem to be gathering for their evening meal. Our screen follows that of another Murvi owner who reported on success using a telescopic curtain pole and string curtains from Wilkinsons. So far so good.
