August 1st 2015: Norway: Kvitsoy 1

Monty the Motorhome is surrounded by water, on a small island called Kvitsoy, just off Stavanger on the Norwegian mainland.

We left the campsite at Egersund this morning and visited the town, finding a car park with a number of motorhomes that looked as if they had overnighted there. This was confirmed on speaking to one of the owners, who said it was completely free all day and night. Worth bearing in mind if we make a return journey.
However we may not as the town was quite disappointing, without any obvious attractions or sights. Within 30 minutes we had wandered around and were ready to leave. A quick food stock up at the Coop and we were off.

Initially our plans had been to travel north today, but Rachael and Ivar had come down in their sail boat and were moored up at the island of Kvitsoy. They had been really enthusiastic about the place and wanted us to visit them there. We had been intending to link up with them somewhere in the Stavanger area, but really expected this to be on the mainland. We had been quite lukewarm about the prospect of going to Kvitsoy as an internet search did not show any motorhome links to the island, which also at 6 square kilometers did not appear too big.

However we decided to go and see and hope there was somewhere to stay. Luckily we caught the 1.00pm ferry with seconds to spare, literally driving on as they shut the barriers behind us. A stormy crossing of 35 minutes and we were there, driving for 5 minutes along a small single track road to a small parking area at one of the quays. Rachael and Ivar appeared minutes later and we enjoyed a reunion - first time we have seen each other since the Spring.
The weather was dreadful, so it was sitting in the van, followed by sitting in the boat, catching up with news and family affairs.

Kvitsoy in the evening sun, after the storm.

Tonight we plan to stay in this quayside car park - I cannot see anyone getting upset about it as there are so few cars about. The forecast for tomorrow is good, so maybe we’ll see what the island is like.

Sorry there have been no photos so far - the one above took over 30 minutes to load, so probably no more for the foreseeable future
