August 2nd 2015: Norway: Kvitsøy 2

Monty the Motorhome is still on Kvitsøy, still parked in the quay car park adjacent to the Hummermuseum (Lobster Museum) and worried about seagulls pooping on his roof!

Today the sun shone and made the island look absolutely idyllic. All the houses are brightly painted, mostly white, but a few other colours are present just to liven up the view. Sail boats and motorised craft are constantly on the move, but there is a real laid back atmosphere to the whole environment. It seems the sort of community where everyone knows each other and no one bothers locking their doors at night.

Today we met up with Rachael and Ivar again, firstly to take a drive to the other end of the island and have a short walk, before returning to our parking spot and going for a longer walk.

On returning we visited the Lobster Museum - which has been established on Kvitsøy as this area was noted for its Lobsters. Unfortunately over-fishing has all but wiped out the stock. The museum had plenty of old artifacts associated with lobster fishing, which were interesting; however the best thing was a lobster hatchery. A spawning lobster was housed in a tank of swirling water, which swept the young away from her and into another tank, where individuals were separated apart and put into their own little cells to grow and develop. Separation is necessary as they eat each other if kept together. Eventually these young lobsters will be returned to the sea. The whole operation has only been running a couple of months and is completely non-profit making, so only time will tell if it has any success.

We finished the day off on the sail boat, sitting in the evening sunshine and watching the world go by while eating hot dogs, home made coleslaw and potato salad. Lazy Summer Sunday.

Then it was time to say goodbye to Rachael and Ivar for a while. We’re heading north, while they are planning to go down to Egersund, where we were a couple of days ago.

Vibrant colours and breathtaking views
