August 28th 2015: Norway: Bergen 1

Monty the Motorhome is happily tucked in for a second day on Bergen’s only ‘aire’.

We watched the comings and goings this morning. The place is really busy, with most pitches taken. The most surprising thing is that it is due to close for the season on August 31st - three days time! There is certainly sufficient demand for it to remain open, and in all likelihood there is even sufficient demand for another facility like this in Bergen - after all it is Norway’s second city, with a high influx of tourists.

In the late morning we travelled in the city centre to meet up with Rachael and to visit the Norwegian Fisheries Museum. The trip started with a ride to the museum in a historic old ferry. It was a tiny little boat, with an engine that sounded like it might pack up at any minute, and belched out diesel fumes. The guy piloting it looked about as old as the boat, but he got us there without mishap.
The museum itself has only recently re-opened after being closed for quite a while for refurbishment. It has all been done very tastefully and the exhibitions are interactive and informative. We finished by watching a 20 minute film of three fishermen talking together - one was elderly, one middle aged and the third was a youngster.  They chatted about the fishing industry, what it meant to them and how it is changing. Each person was shown on a separate screen, giving the viewer the impression they were in the room with them. It was innovative and thought provoking.

We returned on the chugging ferry and then went back to the Ivar and Rachael’s boat. Unfortunately he is still away working, so we’re not sure when we’ll see him. Ruth and I took the opportunity to use the Marina’s showers, before going out to Naboen, a restaurant specialising in Swedish food. The food was delicious, well cooked and presented. I suspect this will be going on Rachael’s list of places to re-visit.
