September 3rd 2015: Norway: Bergen 4

Monty the Motorhome is back at the Bergenshallen. We returned today and found nothing to indicate there is any imminent danger of it closing down for the season.

So safely parked up we took the Bybanen (tram) out of the city to the stop with the interesting name of ‘Hop’, then took a 20 minute walk to Troldhaugen - the home and now museum to the composer Edvard Grieg.
Grieg was brought up in Bergen, and though educated in Germany he returned to live his adult life at Troldhaugen. It is a house that occupies a lovely setting, overlooking the coastal Nordåsvatnet lake. We listened to the guided tour of the house, before settling down to a 30 minute piano concert by Turid Bakke Braut, acclaimed as one of the best in Norway. She played a number of pieces from his Norwegian Folksongs works, before finishing with ‘Wedding Day at Troldhaugen’ - one of his most famous works. This latter piece has a really catchy theme, unusual in classical works, such that we were humming it on the return journey back to the van.

The weather today has been sunny. Yes sunny in Bergen. So we decided to see the sunset from the top of Mt Fløyen. This 320m high viewpoint overlooks the city and is easily reached by the 26-degree Fløibanen funicular. When we got to the top there were hundreds of people there, all with the same idea.
